Psalm 68:1-14 God's Presence Scatters His Enemies

1.“Let God arise! Let his enemies be scattered! Let them who hate him also flee before him.2.As smoke is driven away, so drive them away. As wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.3.But let the righteous be glad. Let them rejoice before God. Yes, let them rejoice with gladness.4.Sing to God! Sing praises to his name! Extol him who rides on the clouds: to Yah, his name! Rejoice before him!5.A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.6.God sets the lonely in families. He brings out the prisoners with singing, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.
7.God, when you went forth before your people, when you marched through the wilderness… Selah.8.The earth trembled. The sky also poured down rain at the presence of the God of Sinai—at the presence of God, the God of Israel.9.You, God, sent a plentiful rain. You confirmed your inheritance, when it was weary.10.Your congregation lived therein. You, God, prepared your goodness for the poor.11.The Lord announced the word. The ones who proclaim it are a great company.12."Kings of armies flee! They flee!" She who waits at home divides the spoil,13.while you sleep among the campfires, the wings of a dove sheathed with silver, her feathers with shining gold.14.When the Almighty scattered kings in her, it snowed on Zalmon.

Observations

68:1-14.

The last part of the psalm might have been prompted by the bringing of the ark to Jerusalem, but goes beyond that to envisioning the enthronement of God in the sanctuary in Jerusalem and the Messiah's permanent rule in Jerusalem. The scope broadens beyond a mere victory of God over the enemies of Israel to the ascension of the Messiah to the throne and establishment of Israel as the pre-eminent nation. At no time in Israel's history have millions of chariots been in Jerusalem so it is most likely a reference to the angels. When an emperor would return from a victory, he would receive gifts and servants from his vassals, and give gifts to his faithful (see how this is used in Ephesians 4).

68:3-4.

When God acts, the righteous will rejoice and proclaim His praises. This verse (68:4) identifies God's name as Yah, a shortened form of Yahweh.

68:5-14.

David recalls the past actions of God in blessing the righteous and needy, and in destroying the wicked, giving him confidence in God's future actions.

Application

Be on God's side, so your enemies are His enemies. When He scatters them, rejoice.

Prayer

God, You scatter the darkness with the light of Your presence, please show Yourself in helping me, so I can rejoice in Your provision. Thanks. Amen.

Proverbs 17:21-28 Fools Cause Grief

21.“He who becomes the father of a fool grieves. The father of a fool has no joy.22.A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.23.A wicked man receives a bribe in secret, to pervert the ways of justice.24.Wisdom is before the face of one who has understanding, but the eyes of a fool wander to the ends of the earth.25.A foolish son brings grief to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.26.Also to punish the righteous is not good, nor to flog officials for their integrity.
27.He who spares his words has knowledge. A man of understanding is even tempered.28.Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise. When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning.“

Observation

17:21-28. This group of proverbs delineate wise and foolish behaviors. The father of a fool grieves and has no joy. That's because the father is a fool, because he didn't choose the right objective of bringing up his child in the fear and instruction of the Lord. Fools beget fools. A cheerful heart is contrasted with a crushed spirit; the former from the right just objectives, the latter from the wrong objectives (woe is me).
A wise person keeps those wise objectives in front of them, so they pursue them; not so the fool, they can't keep focused on what's right since they're always looking for something easier and more fun. The fool's mother joins her husband in lamenting their failure as parents. Punishing the righteous is not good, nor wise, because it discourages the right behavior. The fool is graciously given a tip on how to be considered wise: act like the wise and keep your mouth shut when appropriate (which means you have to know the right objective).

Application

It takes wise parents (who acquire and consistently apply knowledge) to raise wise kids; it's easier and more fun to raise fools, until you have to live with the consequences of poor parenting.

Prayer

Lord, please don't let me lose sight of wisdom, and prevent me from falling into folly, so I may walk in Your ways and experience the joy of the righteous. Amen.

Nehemiah 8-13 Spiritual and Physical Renewal

These closing chapters of the book describe the restoration of the people to God through the renewal of the covenant. Their response to God's revelation demonstrates Biblical worship, and results in real joy. Nehemiah's motivation is clearly outlined in chapter 13, and explains why he was able to give up the best job on earth to give glory to God in rebuilding the physical and spiritual wall around His people. The prayer in chapter 9 is a great summary of God's dealings with Israel, and worth repeated study.

Nehemiah 8 A Really Long Sermon

1.All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the broad place that was before the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh had commanded to Israel.2.Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.3.He read from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.4.Ezra the scribe stood on a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood...5.Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:6.and Ezra blessed Yahweh, the great God. All the people answered, "Amen, Amen," with the lifting up of their hands. They bowed their heads, and worshiped Yahweh with their faces to the ground.7.Also Jeshua...and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stayed in their place.8.They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.9.Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites who taught the people, said to all the people, "This day is holy to Yahweh your God. Don’t mourn, nor weep." For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.10.Then he said to them, "Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved; for the joy of Yahweh is your strength."11.So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, "Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be grieved."12.All the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.13.On the second day the heads of fathers’ households of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, gathered to Ezra the scribe, even to give attention to the words of the law.14.They found written in the law, how that Yahweh had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month;15.and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, "Go out to the mountain, and get olive branches, and branches of wild olive, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written."16.So the people went out, and brought them, and made themselves booths, everyone on the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the water gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim17.All the assembly of those who had come again out of the captivity made booths, and lived in the booths; for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the children of Israel had not done so. There was very great gladness.18.Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. They kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.

Observations

8:1-8.

At the beginning of the religious year (seventh month – Feast of Trumpets [Lev. 23:2] Rosh Hashanah), the returned exiles make a new beginning, starting with blessing God and reading-understanding His law. Ezra read from early morning to midday, and everyone paid close attention. Many of the hearers had grown up speaking Aramaic, and didn't understand the Hebrew, so the Levites translated and interpreted. Reading is not a magic charm; it is the understanding (and doing) of what God revealed for His people to do in response to His word, that makes the difference.

8:9-13.

What the people understood was that they were not doing what God wanted, and that they had chosen the path of harmful ignorance and cursings, so they wept and grieved. The leaders encouraged them with the meaning of the Feast of Trumpets, which began the most sacred month, and symbolized the new beginnings of the nation. Joy, resulting from an expectation of blessings, provided emotional (e-motion) strength to move in the right direction.

8:13-17.

On the next day the leadership gathered for more in-depth Torah/Bible study, and discovered the Feast of Booths/Tabernacles which occurred after the harvest and wine had been gathered, and commemorated the Israelites dwelling under God's protection after their deliverance from Egypt. 1Kg 8:2,65; 2Chron 7; Ezra 3:4 indicate the feast had been kept, but the joy with which it was kept hadn't been seen since Joshua's day.

Application

We need to know the Truth before we can live the Truth; We need to live the Truth before we can experience its blessings.

Prayer

God, thanks that You communicate Your will to us in a way that is accessible, and understandable. May my response to it delight both of us. Amen.

Nehemiah 9 A Prayer to Ponder

1.Now in the twenty-fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackcloth, and earth on them.2.The seed of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers3.They stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of Yahweh their God a fourth part of the day; and a fourth part they confessed, and worshiped Yahweh their God.4.Then Jeshua...5.Then the Levites...said, "Stand up and bless Yahweh your God from everlasting to everlasting! Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise!6.You are Yahweh, even you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their hosts, the earth and all things that are on it, the seas and all that is in them, and you preserve them all. The hosts of heaven worships you.7.You are Yahweh, the God who chose Abram, and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gave him the name of Abraham,8.and found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite...to give it to his seed, and have performed your words; for you are righteous.9."You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the Red Sea,10.and showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh...for you knew that they dealt proudly against them, and made a name for yourself, as it is this day.11.You divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and you cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into the mighty waters.12.Moreover, in a pillar of cloud you led them by day; and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light in the way in which they should go.13."You came down also on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments,14.and made known to them your holy Sabbath, and commanded them commandments, and statutes, and a law, by Moses your servant,15.and gave them bread from the sky for their hunger, and brought forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and commanded them that they should go in to possess the land which you had sworn to give them.16."But they and our fathers dealt proudly and hardened their neck, didn’t listen to your commandments,17.and refused to obey, neither were they mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but hardened their neck, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in hesed/loyal covenantal love, and didn’t forsake them.18.Yes, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed awful blasphemies;19.yet you in your manifold mercies didn’t forsake them in the wilderness: the pillar of cloud didn’t depart from over them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to show them light, and the way in which they should go.20.You gave also your good Spirit to instruct them, and didn’t withhold your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst.21."Yes, forty years you sustained them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing. Their clothes didn’t grow old, and their feet didn’t swell.22.Moreover you gave them kingdoms and peoples, which you allotted according to their portions. So they possessed the land of...(giants)...23.You also multiplied their children as the stars of the sky, and brought them into the land...(promised)24."So the children went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hands, with their kings, and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they pleased.25.They took fortified cities, and a rich land, and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns dug out, vineyards, and olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate, were filled, became fat, and delighted themselves in your great goodness.26."Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against you, and cast your law behind their back, and killed your prophets that testified against them to turn them again to you, and they committed awful blasphemies.27.Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them. In the time of their trouble, when they cried to you, you heard from heaven; and according to your manifold mercies you gave them saviors who saved them out of the hand of their adversaries.28.But after they had rest, they did evil again before you; therefore left you them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them; yet when they returned, and cried to you, you heard from heaven; and many times you delivered them according to your mercies,29.and testified against them, that you might bring them again to your law. Yet they dealt proudly, and didn’t listen to your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances, (which if a man does, he shall live in them), turned their backs, stiffened their neck, and would not hear.30.Yet many years you put up with them, and testified against them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet would they not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.31."Nevertheless in your manifold mercies you did not make a full end of them, nor forsake them; for you are a gracious and merciful God.32.Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and hesed/loyal love, don’t let all the travail seem little before you, that has come on us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria to this day.33.However you are just in all that has come on us; for you have dealt faithfully, but we have done wickedly;34.neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept your law, nor listened to your commandments and your testimonies with which you testified against them.35.For they have not served you in their kingdom, and in your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and rich land which you gave before them, neither did they turn from their wicked works.36."Behold, we are servants this day, and as for the land that you gave to our fathers to eat its fruit and its good, behold, we are servants in it.37.It yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins: also they have power over our bodies, and over our livestock, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.38.Yet for all this, we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, our Levites, and our priests, seal it."

Observations

9:1-4.

Three hours of Bible reading followed by three hours of confession puts a crimp in one's day, but crispness in one's soul. The pattern of responding to revelation in confession of sin (where necessary) and planned obedience (always necessary) is the essence of worship (response to revelation).

9:5-38.

This is one of the great prayers of the Scriptures, giving the history of God's dealings with His people in a nutshell. It's worth reading multiple times in it's entirety (like every day for a week, and once a month for a year), focusing on the revealed character and purposes of God. He is the Creator and Sustainer of both the universe and His people.

9:7-8.

Note that God chose Abe, and after finding his heart faithful (Abe obediently left Ur and sojourned - Gen 12), then God made the covenant with him to give him the land (Gen 15).

9:9-15.

God glorified Himself in delivering His people from Egypt, and then provided for their spiritual, physical, and aspirational needs.

9:16-25.

The people chose to rebel, yet God graciously pardoned and remained loyal to His covenantal promises (hesed). He continued to care for them, and correct them, so He could bless them, and cause them to delight in His great goodness.

9:26-30.

Instead of responding to God's great goodness with loyal obedience and service, the Israelites rebelled and “cast your law behind their back” (9:26). This is exactly what the wicked do in Psalm 50:17-18. In that psalm and this passage, the wicked are redeemed people who know and don't do God's word. In fact they go on to kill the prophets God graciously sent to get them to repent. God disciplined them and then delivered them when they repented. His goal was to get them to obey the law (9:29). Anyone who says that God didn't expect His people to obey, or that the law was given to show they couldn't keep it, is promoting Satan's lies (either through ignorance of the Scriptures or sin 2Tim 2:26).

9:31-38.

Nevertheless, God, in His hesed preserved His people through their just, earned discipline. The people look like they are learning from the history of disobedience and make a covenant to obey, so they might enjoy the fruit of the land rather than sending it to the overlords who oppress them.

Application

When a smart person recognizes that disobedience separates them from blessing and reaps discipline, they decide to obey what God has commanded, and join with others for help in obeying.

Prayer

Creator God, You are so gracious in offering to bless those who are loyal to You; may I be among those who delight You with my faithfulness, rather than those who reap your discipline for disobedience. Amen.

Nehemiah 10 Fellow-Partakers in Holiness

1.Now those who sealed were: Nehemiah the governor...8....the priests.9.The Levites: namely, Jeshua...28.The rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinim, and all those who had separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, everyone who had knowledge, and understanding29.they joined with their brothers, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God’s law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of Yahweh our Lord, and his ordinances and his statutes;30.and that we would not give our daughters to the peoples of the land, nor take their daughters for our sons;31.and if the peoples of the land bring wares or any grain on the Sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy of them on the Sabbath, or on a holy day; and that we would forego the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.32.Also we made ordinances for ourselves, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;33.for the show bread, and for the continual meal offering, and for the continual burnt offering, for the Sabbaths, for the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to make atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.34.We cast lots, the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, according to our fathers’ houses, at times appointed, year by year, to burn on the altar of Yahweh our God, as it is written in the law;35.and to bring the first fruits of our ground, and the first fruits of all fruit of all kinds of trees, year by year, to the house of Yahweh;36.also the firstborn of our sons, and of our livestock, as it is written in the law...38....Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes to the house of our God, to the rooms, into the treasure house.39.We will not forsake the house of our God.

Observation

10:1-38.

The community bind themselves with a covenant and curse (sanctions for violating it) to obey the law as written. The specifics mentioned are not intermarrying, honoring the Sabbath every week and the Sabbath year, and providing the financial resources for all the offerings, including the wood for burning them. They pledge to not forsake the house of God (and all that was required to maintain it). This will all be forgotten by chapter 13.

Application

Joining together with others to provide accountability in doing what God wants, strengthens our resolve and improves our results.

Prayer

Thank You God for the fellowship of like-minded believers who are committed to walking with You and each other. Amen.

Nehemiah 11 City Dwellers

1.The princes of the people lived in Jerusalem: the rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts in the other cities.2.The people blessed all the men who willingly offered themselves to dwell in Jerusalem. 3 Now these are the chiefs of the province who lived in Jerusalem; but in the cities of Judah everyone lived in his possession in their cities....

Observation

11:1-36.

Since Jerusalem wasn't the best neighborhood, lots were cast to have a tenth of the population live in the city and protect it. Some cared more about the glory of God than their landscaping, and volunteered to move in.

Nehemiah 12 Dedication and Joy

1.Now these are the priests and the Levites who went up with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua...26.These were in the days of Joiakim the son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor, and of Ezra the priest the scribe.27.At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with giving thanks, and with singing, with cymbals, stringed instruments, and with harps.30.The priests and the Levites purified themselves; and they purified the people, and the gates, and the wall.31.Then I brought up the princes of Judah on the wall, and appointed two great companies who gave thanks and went in procession...43.They offered great sacrifices that day, and rejoiced; for God had made them rejoice with great joy; and the women also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.47.All Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, as every day required: and they set apart that which was for the Levites; and the Levites set apart that which was for the sons of Aaron.

Observation

12:1-47.

The dedication of the wall was an occasion for joy. The godly leadership of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah made sure that the Levites were adequately equipped to do their job. Good leadership and good parenting also celebrate milestones and accomplishments that keep people progressing in the right direction.

Application

When a purified people responds to what God commands, with obedience and praise, there is gladness all around.

Prayer

God, thanks for the things You've done in and through my life, and the joy that has resulted; I look forward to what You will continue to do in the future. Thanks for giving meaning to my existence. Amen.

Nehemiah 13 Last Tasks and Prayers

1.On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God forever,2.because they didn’t meet the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them: however our God turned the curse into a blessing.3.It came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.4.Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the rooms of the house of our God, being allied to Tobiah (the Ammonite),5.had prepared for him a great room, where they laid the meal offerings...6.But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king: and after certain days I asked leave of the king,7.and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a room in the courts of the house of God.8.It grieved me severely: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the room.9.Then I commanded, and they cleansed the rooms: and there brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meal offerings and the frankincense.10.I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled everyone to his field.11.Then I contended with the rulers, and said, "Why is the house of God forsaken?" I gathered them together, and set them in their place.12.Then brought all Judah the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the treasuries.13.I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe...for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute to their brothers.14.Remember me, my God, concerning this, and don’t wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its observances.15.In those days saw I in Judah some men treading winepresses on the Sabbath....17.Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, "What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the Sabbath day?18.Didn’t your fathers do thus, and didn’t our God bring all this evil on us, and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath."19.I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I set some of my servants over the gates, that no burden should be brought in on the Sabbath day.22.I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember to me, my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of your hesed/loyal covenantal love.23.In those days also saw I the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:24.and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.25.I contended with them, and cursed them, and struck certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, "You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.26.Didn’t Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless foreign women caused even him to sin.27.Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?"28.One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.29.Remember them, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.30.Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners, and appointed duties for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work;31.and for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the first fruits. Remember me, my God, for good.

Observations

13:1-9.

This last chapter highlights the crucial leadership task of oversight. Nehemiah had shepherded God's people to a good pasture, but while back in Babylon, Satan had wormed his way into the system and undermined the obedience of the people (all the things they promised to obey in chapter 10). Like a good leader Nehemiah found out what was going on, and took decisive steps to correct the evil, in the first place, tossing Tobiah and his possessions out of the temple.

13:10-14.

Nehemiah next had to confront the leaders who had neglected their job of oversight, in letting the covenanted obedience lapse. They had failed to support the Levites who taught and carried out the divinely mandated worship, so the Levites had gone back to their fields to support themselves. Nehemiah reproved the leaders and restored the Levites. Study his prayer in 13:14 and see if you can state his motivation in a sentence.

13:15-22.

Another covenanted obedience was honoring the Sabbath command of “no work.” This sin, which brought God's wrath on the people was being repeated, again. Nehemiah exercised his authority to correct the situation, instructing the people in the process. The section ends with another sentence prayer of Nehemiah,

13:23-31.

Incredibly, the biggest sin that was addressed by both Ezra and Nehemiah, and which the people also covenanted to forsake, resurfaced: they were marrying foreign wives! The son of the high priest had married one, defiling the priesthood. Earlier, Ezra had pulled out his own hair over the pagan marriages. Nehemiah, however, pulls out the hair of the sinners, and re-cleanses the people. The book ends with yet another sentence prayer underscoring the motivation of Nehemiah which enabled him to do so much good: “Remember me, my God, for good.”

Application

Godly leaders need to be motivated by God's reward for their faithfulness, because there isn't always a lot of job satisfaction, nor appreciation (it's mainly opposition).

Prayer

God, thanks that You see and remember all that goes on, and reward those who are faithful to You. Thanks too for examples like Ezra and Nehemiah, who lived for Your glory; may I follow in their footsteps. Amen.

Digging Deeper

God in a nutshell: God uses leaders who are motivated by His judgment to lead His people in restoration and obedience. He is patient in dealing with the sin of His people, bringing earned consequences for disobedience in efforts to get them to return to obeying His laws, and giving them blessings and joy for obedience. God expects all His commands to be carried out, and will both withhold blessings and send cursing until His people are wholly focused on obeying Him. God remembers and rewards our work for Him.

Us in a nutshell: We are capable of responding to God's revelation, but our will to persevere in obedience is weak. Covenanting with others to obey can help, but is no substitute for wholehearted pursuit of God's will. We will experience opposition and setbacks, but to remember that God remembers gives encouragement to persevere and overcome obstacles.
